Clearing is how universities fill remaining spots on their courses after results day. You can use Clearing if you don't hold any offers, didn't meet the conditions of your firm or insurance choice, decide you want to change course or university, or apply for the first time after 30 June.
Clearing for 2026 entry runs from 2 July to 19 October 2026, though most activity happens around results days — 4 August for Scotland and 13 August for England, Wales and Northern Ireland A-levels.
Wondering when you'll get your A-level grades? Results for students in England, Wales and Northern Ireland will be released on Thursday 13 August 2026, from 8am (or whenever your school or college opens). You'll be able to check your UCAS Hub status from 8am, but you can't add a Clearing choice until 1pm.
You might be wondering how and when you'll receive your Qualifications Scotland results? This year, results for your Qualifications Scotland exams will be released on Tuesday 4 August 2026.
If you've signed up for My Qualifications Scotland, you'll receive your results by text and/or email from 8am. Your certificate will also arrive by post. UCAS Hub updates from 8am, and you can add a Clearing choice from 10am.
Yes — this is sometimes called "Adjustment." If you exceed the conditions of your firm offer, you may have a short window to explore alternative courses without losing your original place, should you decide to stick with it.
Once you have a verbal offer from a university, you'll need to wait for your UCAS Hub to show you're eligible for Clearing, then add your Clearing choice yourself. You can only add one Clearing choice at a time, so make sure you're ready to commit before you do.
Have your UCAS Personal ID, your results/grades, and a shortlist of courses and universities you're interested in. It also helps to prepare a couple of honest reasons why the course or university is right for you, in case you're asked.
As soon as possible. Popular residences fill up quickly around results days, so it's worth researching your options and even reserving a room provisionally before you've fully confirmed your university place, where possible.
Yes — demand and availability can vary by city and by nation, so if you're weighing up options across England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, it's worth checking accommodation availability for each city you're considering as part of your decision.
You still have options. You can go through Clearing to find an alternative course, speak to your firm/insurance university about whether they'll still accept you, look into resits, or consider a gap year and reapplying next year.
