How to Prepare for Life After University 💡
UNITED KINGDOM
Perched right at the tip of Cornwall's coastline, Falmouth is unlike any other student town in the UK. With beaches on nearly every side, a maritime history dating back to its founding as a deep-water port, and a creative energy that runs through the whole town, it's a place built for exploring — whether that's sea swimming at Gylly Beach, catching live music at The Poly, or joining thousands of others for the Sea Shanty Festival's free nautical takeover of the streets each June.
Falmouth and neighbouring Penryn share a genuinely tight-knit, creative community, home to Falmouth University's specialisms in art, media and design, as well as the Cornwall campus of the University of Exeter. Life here moves at a different pace to the big cities — think independent cafes, harbourside walks, and a coastline made for surfing, paddleboarding and clifftop hikes — while still delivering the nights out, festivals and student social scene you'd expect from any great university town. Ready to leave home to start university, but worried about settling in? Here are our top tips…
Falmouth is one of the most unique student towns in the UK, with beaches on nearly every side. Gylly Beach is a short walk from campus and popular for sea swimming, while Swanpool and Maenporth offer quieter spots for a coastal walk. Beyond the beaches, there's a strong arts and music scene, with regular exhibitions and live events at The Poly, plus a foodie scene built around fresh, locally caught seafood.
Yes — Falmouth offers a genuinely different pace of student life compared to bigger cities, combining a lively student social scene with the calm of coastal living. It's home to Falmouth University, the University of Exeter's Cornwall Campus, and Cornwall College, giving the town a strong, close-knit student community relative to its size.
Falmouth is generally considered a safe, welcoming town for students, with a close-knit community and a relaxed pace of life compared to bigger UK cities. As with anywhere, it's worth taking the usual precautions at night, particularly around the harbour and coastal paths after dark.
Falmouth is home to Falmouth University and the University of Exeter's Cornwall Campus, both based at the shared Penryn Campus just outside town, as well as Cornwall College's Falmouth campus in the town centre itself, which offers further education and vocational courses including marine engineering and boatbuilding.
Falmouth and Penryn are well connected by train, bus and bike. Trains run between Falmouth and Penryn in around five minutes, while regular bus services — including the 32, 32A, 3, 33 and 33A routes — link the Penryn Campus with Falmouth town centre in around 15 to 20 minutes. The town itself is compact and easy to explore on foot.
Cornwall's coastline offers no shortage of options nearby, from St Ives and Newquay to The Lizard Peninsula and Land's End. Truro, Cornwall's cathedral city, is easily reached by train and offers a wider range of shops and restaurants for when you want a change of scene.
