Ranking of the Best Student Cities in France for the 2026-2027 Academic Year

Best Student Cities in France

If someone asks you, “What’s the best student city in France?”, what comes to mind? For many people — especially those abroad — the answer is Paris. It makes sense: the French capital is home to the country’s most prestigious universities, top grandes écoles, and the largest student population, with more than 800,000 students.

Yet, according to L’Étudiant 2026 ranking, the leading reference for student city rankings in France, Paris is only ranked 19th, tied with Amiens and Marseille.

So if it’s not Paris, then where? This guide explores the best student cities in France, while adding our own perspective: student accommodation, the rental market, affordability, accessibility, and everyday quality of life — factors that are just as important as a university’s reputation when choosing where to study.

How Are the Best Student Cities Ranked?

Since 2005, L’Étudiant has published its annual ranking of the best student cities in France. The 2026 edition evaluated 50 French cities with at least 7,500 students, using 10 indicators grouped into five main categories:

Each city is scored out of a total of 103 points. New for 2026: the ranking includes, for the first time, an accessibility for people with disabilities criterion, developed in partnership with APF France Handicap.

This ranking is an excellent starting point, but it doesn’t tell the whole story. While it considers housing and accessibility, these aspects are not covered in much detail. That’s exactly where this guide comes in.

Top 10 Best Student Cities in France for 2026

Toulouse, Rennes, Montpellier, Caen, and Nantes emerge as the best student cities for the 2026-2027 academic year.

Meanwhile, Paris drops to 19th place, mainly due to the high cost of housing, despite having the strongest cultural offering in the ranking.

Western France continues to strengthen its reputation as a student destination, with four cities in the top 10: Rennes, Caen, Nantes, and Brest.

By contrast, Lyon remains behind despite receiving the highest possible score for attractiveness. Lower scores for the diversity of study opportunities, local initiatives, air quality, and housing availability prevent it from ranking higher.

What Criteria Really Matter When Ranking the Best Student Cities in France?

L’Étudiant’s ranking is an excellent starting point, but some criteria deserve a closer look. Here’s our own perspective on the factors that make the biggest difference to everyday student life.

Widest Choice of Study Programmes

If you haven’t yet decided on a career path or want to keep as many options open as possible, some cities stand out.

For international students looking for a range of study opportunities comparable to Paris without the drawbacks of living in the capital, Lyon and Toulouse are the two most versatile destinations.

Student Accommodation Costs

Housing is the single biggest factor affecting a student’s monthly budget. According to the 2026 Student Housing Market report by LocService.fr, the national average rent for a student studio in France has reached €583/month. However, this average masks a significant territorial divide.

While smaller regional towns offer lower costs, the reality for students moving to major academic hubs is a highly competitive, fast-moving market.

The National Rent Divide

LocationAverage Monthly Rent (Studio)
French Provinces (Average)~€636/month
National Average (Overall)~€583/month
Paris ~€923/month

Beyond just the price, however, the biggest challenge students face today is availability. The same study highlights that major academic hubs are currently experiencing extreme rental tension, with demand far exceeding supply.

Queuing with dozens of other people just to view a substandard apartment isn’t a realistic option. That’s exactly the problem Yugo is committed to solving.

While Yugo isn’t available in every city, we offer high-quality, secure student housing at competitive prices in France's most sought-after locations. Explore your options across our 5 French destinations!

Student Housing Market: Competitive or Easy to Access?

The level of competition in the rental market — that is, the balance between housing supply and demand — varies significantly from one city to another.

In Paris, Lyon, and Bordeaux, rental listings can disappear within hours, and landlords are often highly selective when reviewing applications. In contrast, cities such as Caen, Brest, and Dijon have a much less competitive rental market, giving students more time to find accommodation and offering a wider choice of shared housing.

In cities where demand is high, private student residences such as Yugo are often the quickest and most convenient option

You can book online, rooms are fully furnished, and accommodation is available even for last-minute arrivals.

Quality of Life: Weather, Culture, and Sustainable Transport

Not everything is about numbers. When choosing where to study, other details matter just as much, like the weather, the local culture, and your daily quality of life.

If you love the sun, Marseille is a great choice. According to climate data from Météo-France, the coastal city gets around 300 days of sunshine a year. This is great for your daily mood, and it also brings a real financial benefit: you can save money on heating and electricity if your room gets lots of natural light.

For students who want to experience French culture, Lyon is a perfect option. Known as the food capital of France and featuring a historic center protected by UNESCO, it has the best cultural scene outside of Paris. With its famous museums, art events, and the well-known Fête des Lumières, there is always something to do.

If making friends and having an active social life are your main goals, Lille is a top pick. Located close to several European capitals, the city is famous for its welcoming locals and strong social life, making it easy for newcomers to feel at home.

Finally, for students who prefer to move around on a bike, Bordeaux is a great place to live. Often highlighted by the FUB (Fédération française des usagers de la bicyclette), Bordeaux is one of the most bike-friendly cities in the country. Because the city is flat and has a huge network of cycle paths, getting from your home to campus on two wheels is safe and easy.

Accessibility for Students with Disabilities (Wheelchair Users and Visually Impaired Students)

This is the major new addition to the 2026 ranking: for the first time, L’Étudiant includes an accessibility criterion, developed in partnership with APF France Handicap.

The initial results highlight Rennes and Nantes as the cities with the most accessible public transport systems and university campuses. Despite their size, Lyon and Toulouse still have room for improvement, particularly on some of their older metro and tram lines.

When it comes to accommodation, many Yugo residences are designed to be accessible, with features such as lifts, wheelchair-accessible rooms, and step-free communal areas. This includes residences such as Lyon GerlandParis Beaugrenelle and Lille Euralille.

Which Student City Is Right for You?

The best choice depends just as much on your academic goals as on your lifestyle. Here are a few suggestions based on some of the most common student profiles — including the cities where Yugo can house you.

Lyon: A Major City Full of Opportunities (But Not Paris)

Lyon is the obvious choice, and one of the best-placed big cities in the 2026 ranking (joint 6th). It’s France’s second-largest university hub, offers one of the country’s most diverse ranges of study programmes, has a strong economy, and boasts an outstanding cultural scene.

Studio rents are a bit higher, but the quality of life and career opportunities make it well worth it — and Yugo Lyon is right there to take the hassle out of finding a place.

Lyon mixes an amazing arts scene with its reputation as the food capital of France. It’s the ideal spot for students who want a balanced routine: great academics during the week and endless cultural spots to discover on your days off.

Bordeaux: Easy Access to Paris Without Paying Paris Prices

Bordeaux is just two hours from Paris by high-speed train, with an outstanding quality of life, renowned gastronomy, a thriving cultural scene, and much lower housing costs than the capital.

It rounds out the 2026 top 10 in 10th place, and there are 5 Yugo residences waiting for you in there.

Paris: The Best of French Academic and Cultural Life

Paris is unbeatable for the breadth of its programmes, the prestige of its institutions, and the richness of its cultural life.

It sits 19th in the 2026 ranking (tied with Amiens and Marseille) almost entirely because of housing costs and a fiercely competitive rental market — which is exactly where a Yugo residence takes the pressure off: furnished, bookable online, and available even at short notice. Check your options!

Living in Paris means having world-class art, cozy corner cafés, and top universities right outside your door. It’s a big, fast-paced city, but coming back to a comfortable room and a friendly community makes it feel like home from day one.

Lille: Close to Everything with a Great Social Life for Students

Lille is one of France’s largest student cities and a genuine European crossroads, roughly an hour from Paris, Brussels, and London by train.

It has a famously lively student life and more affordable rents than the southern metros, and places 12th in the 2026 ranking. In a market where the best rooms go quickly, a Yugo residence lets you skip the scramble.

Lille puts you just a short train ride away from major European capitals. But more importantly, its famously welcoming student community makes finding your crowd and settling in feel totally natural.

Marseille: Sunshine and an Affordable Cost of Living

Marseille is a strong option that’s often overlooked. As France’s second-largest city, it enjoys exceptional sunshine, a rapidly growing higher education sector, and a unique setting between the sea and the hills.

Besides, the average studio rent is among the most affordable of France’s major cities. And the best part: Yugo offers student accommodation there too.

Why choose between your studies and a sunny lifestyle when you can have both? Marseille gives you 300 days of sunshine and the sea right next door, making your student years here feel like a true breath of fresh air.

Rennes: Best Balance Between Quality of Life and Affordability

Rennes performs well across almost every criterion, combining a wide choice of universities, a vibrant student community, and easy access to the coast. With more than 20% of its population made up of students, it offers excellent value for money.

Toulouse: The top choice for Aerospace, Aviation, and Tech students

Choose Toulouse. Known as La Ville Rose (“The Pink City”), it is France’s leading centre for aerospace and digital industries, with major employers including Airbus, Thales, Safran, and CNES. Studio rents average remains reasonable for a city of its size, while student life is exceptionally vibrant.

Conclusion

The best student city is, above all, the one that matches your priorities

Don’t choose where to study based solely on a university’s reputation or course offering. You’re also choosing your day-to-day lifestyle, your budget, the local atmosphere, and your future career opportunities.

The key takeaway from the 2026 ranking is that France’s largest cities are no longer automatically the best choice. Cities such as Rennes, Caen, and Brest also offer an exceptional balance between quality of life and affordability. Meanwhile, Paris, despite its prestige, continues to be held back by its highly competitive and expensive housing market.

Whichever city you choose, finding accommodation is often the most stressful part of starting university. Yugo offers fully furnished student residences in some of France’s most competitive rental markets, with accommodation available even at the last minute.
