Gender-based violence (GBV) refers to harmful actions or behaviours directed at a person because of their gender, gender identity, or perceived gender. It can happen between residents, between staff and residents, or in any community setting.
Sexual harassment (comments, jokes, unwanted advances)
Sexual assault or non-consensual sexual activity
Intimate partner or dating violence
Coercive control, threats, or emotional manipulation
Online harassment, including unwanted messages or images
Stalking or monitoring someone’s movements
Why GBV Matters
It impacts safety, wellbeing, and mental health
It damages community trust and inclusion
It causes long-term emotional and academic consequences
It can escalate if not addressed early

GBV is never acceptable. Yugo is committed to prevention, early intervention, and survivor-centred support.
Yugo’s GBV Reporting & Response Procedure
When gender-based violence is reported, Yugo will follow a clear, supportive process:
Step 1: Listen & Support
A trained staff member will:
Listen without judgement
Ensure immediate safety
Explain available options
Respect your choices and confidentiality
Step 2: Document the Disclosure
Information is recorded securely and sensitively, with your consent and in line with privacy laws.
Step 3: Assess Risk
Yugo will assess immediate safety and wellbeing needs, including: • Risk of ongoing harm • Environmental safety • Need for temporary adjustments (e.g., room changes)
Step 4: Take Action
Depending on your wishes and the severity, options may include:
Formal investigation
Behaviour management or disciplinary action
No further action (survivor’s choice)
Referral to external authorities (if required for safety or by law)
Step 5: Ongoing Support
You will be offered ongoing wellbeing support and follow-up.
