Summertime Newcastle Pub Crawl Guide for Students

Summer is here, at last! We all know there are few things better than sitting outside on those warm summer’s days with a pub crawl and a cold, crisp beer in hand.

What’s more, once exams are over with, you’ll be able to fully make the most of the long summer evenings and fun-packed sunny days.

That’s why we’ve decided to put together a list of 10 of our best recommendations for places to visit in your Newcastle pub crawl this summer.

1. The Tyne Bar, Ouseburn

This is one of the most popular beer gardens that you’ll come across in Newcastle and makes the perfect starting place for a pub crawl with your uni mates.

Not far from the Quayside, it boasts a glitter ball, great pub grub, and music. Ask for the Top Shelf and you’ll be served with the recommended beer, which normally comes from some far-away place on the other side of the world!

The outside space is protected by the road bridge above, so even if the weather’s unpredictable, you’ll still be sheltered!

Nearby you can head up to the Cumberland Arms which always has a great vibe and lots of outdoor seating.

2. The Head of Steam Quayside

The Head of Steam can offer you a huge range of beers.

It is also the ideal location on the Quayside for an Instagram photo shoot, as it’s set alongside a variety of pretty cocktail bars.

3. Urban Garden

Also set on the Quayside, Urban Garden is a fantastic beer garden that was established during the pandemic.

This place, nestled on the banks of the River Tyne, is the most chilled of all our Newcastle pub crawl locations.

It’s known to have hosted evening yoga and morning family events, and has a pretty chilled atmosphere - perfect for unwinding after exams and deadlines.

It tends to attract people who are taking a stroll on the Quayside, thanks to its inviting beer garden serving Brewdog beer. That’s not to say that it isn’t favoured by party-goers, though! There’s something for everyone here.

4. The River Brew Co.

Another chilled place that might be a good one to start your Newcastle pub crawl is the River Brew Co., situated on Gateshead Quayside.

Open since 2018, it has a distinctly relaxed atmosphere, and stocks locally-brewed craft beer.

Get your uni mates together and take some amazing snaps of unrivalled views across the Tyne. Let’s see how many likes you can rack up on Instagram!

5. Wylam Brewery at Palace of Arts

This one’s a slightly fancier one, if you fancy celebrating the end of the academic year in style!

Wylam Brewery at Palace of Arts in Exhibition Park is a great place to have a few beers in the sun and get hold of some delicious burgers.

They also do some truly amazing Sunday lunches inside the pub, although (a true mark of its popularity!) you have to book in advance.

You can do so by emailing with the date, time, and the number of people who will be joining you.

6. City Tavern

Located on a side street smack bang in the city centre close to uni, the City Tavern is a warm, inviting place where you can enjoy a range of gin, beers and ales, as well as gorgeous pub grub 7 days a week.

This pub off Northumberland Street comes complete with a beer garden and a cinema screen.

7. Old George Inn

If you’re a History student this is a must-visit (and even if you’re not!).

This is the oldest pub in Newcastle,  so it would be wrong not to include it in your itinerary for your Newcastle pub crawl!

It has outside seating lining the cobbles of the side street near the Bigg Market, decorated with festive bunting all year long.

At the weekend the market is full of The Old George’s customers, and the pub often hosts a disco.

Drinks are reasonably priced for the centre of Newcastle. At the end of the night you can get a cheeky McDonald's nearby before heading back to your student residence!

8. The Ship Inn

This is another banging pub that should be on your to-visit list for a Newcastle pub crawl while you’re a student.

It has an outdoor seating area with loads of benches and a wooden pagoda, making it a great place to get some fancy snaps of your summer vacations.

Located in Ouseburn, The Ship Inn has a fully vegan menu which you can enjoy while soaking up the sun’s rays.

9. The Cluny

At The Cluny you can enjoy some live music and an all-day bar which serves food.

There’s a hill next to the entrance which is perfect for sunbathing with a drink, so if you want to sit outside, you can tell the bar staff and they’ll give you plastic containers. Make sure you check out their burgers or the ‘Po Boy’ New Orleans-style sandwich.

10. Bridge Tavern

On Newcastle Quayside, you’ll find The Bridge Tavern, named so because of its location by the Tyne Bridge.

Its outdoor terrace is supplied with patio heaters in case the temperature drops a little.

It’s situated close to a few other notable Newcastle pub crawl places we’d recommend. Try out The Central Bar with its roof terrace - a great place to watch the sun go down before carrying on with your Newcastle pub crawl!

After an amazing day checking out Newcastle’s finest beer gardens and pubs, head home to your Knoll Court student residence by Yugo. Recharge your batteries, and get ready to continue the fun the next day!
