How to Prepare for Life After University 💡
Planning a big night out in Birmingham? From sticky-floored clubs and warehouse raves to niche activity bars and live music venues, the city’s nightlife scene has something for every student.
In this complete guide, we’ll run through everything you need to know about Birmingham’s student nightlife – where to go, what nights to hit and how to make the most of one of the UK’s best cities for a night out!
TL;DR: Student nightlife in Birmingham is super diverse – Broad Street is the main hub with student nights running throughout the week, Digbeth is home to warehouse venues where you can rave until the early hours, New Street and Brindleyplace are packed with chic bars and there are plenty of great student pubs near the big universities.
Birmingham has a few different nightlife hotspots, each catering to their own crowd. All are within walking distance of the city centre (except Selly Oak, which forms its own bubble around the University of Birmingham), so definitely worth checking out to get a feel for the vibe.
Broad Street is Birmingham's main nightlife strip and it's exactly what you'd expect – big clubs, bright lights and absolutely heaving on Wednesdays and Thursdays when the main student nights take place.
It's where you'll find classic nightclubs like Rosies, Snobs and Popworld, as well as numerous chicken shops for the essential post-night-out meal. The atmosphere is pure chaos in the best way possible: everyone's dressed up, pre-drinks are flowing and you're guaranteed to bump into someone from your course.
If Broad Street is mainstream madness, Digbeth is where Birmingham's alternative nightlife thrives. This gritty, former industrial area east of the city centre has become the go-to spot for all things techno, house and drum and bass.
Hidden away beneath the railway arches, you’ll find venues like LAB11, XOYO and suki10c, which draw serious ravers from Thursday nights all through the weekend with 4am finishes and basslines you'll feel in your chest for days.
New Street and the adjacent thoroughfares of Bennetts Hill and Temple Street are packed with traditional pubs, activity bars (virtual clay pigeon shooting, anyone?) and trendy drinking spots that are perfect for starting your night or just having a more chilled evening.
You’ll find everything from Wetherspoons with its unbeatable drink places to swanky cocktail bars lined up along Colmore Row. New Street’s also home to a mind boggling number of fast food spots which stay open late – always handy at the end of the night!
Selly Oak, to the south of the city, has its own little nightlife ecosystem catering almost exclusively to UoB students. The high street is lined with classic pubs like the Goose, countless chicken shops and even a late-night bar in the form of Circo which gets lively on Mondays and Fridays.
UoB’s very own Guild of Students serves as a major nightlife venue, transforming into a club on Wednesdays and Saturdays for Sports Night and FAB – two legendary events eagerly awaited by attending students every week.
Broad Street has a host of club venues running student-only events throughout the week – think cheap drinks, sticky floors and multiple rooms blasting chart-toppers and sing-along bangers.
Rosies is an absolute institution and probably has the most famous student night in Birmingham with Vodbull Thursdays. It draws students from all of Birmingham's universities and with vodka Red Bull mixers priced at £2 all night, it can get pretty messy!
The venue itself is massive with several floors and different areas, so you can switch between chart music, dance and R&B depending on your mood. It's not fancy, and you'll definitely lose your mates at some point, but that's the whole vibe.
Location: Broad Street, City Centre
What to expect: Big club setting, Thursday student nights, mix of genres
Snobs is another beloved nightclub with roots dating all the way back to 1972. And while it's changed locations a couple of times during those years (now based on Broad Street), it still retains every bit of its grungy, alternative energy.
It's known for Big Wednesdays, which has been the student night of choice for generations of Birmingham students. It's an indie club at heart, so expect alt-rock bangers with a healthy dose of Britpop.
Location: Broad Street, City Centre
What to expect: Indie music, Wednesday student nights, buzzing atmosphere
Popworld is unapologetically cheesy and that's exactly why it works. Ducktail Thursdays is the main student night with £2 vodka mixers and a playlist full of guilty pleasure hits – we're talking 2000s pop, Disney songs and throwback bangers.
The venue's bright, colourful and doesn't take itself seriously at all. Multiple rooms mean you can escape to different music if the cheese gets too much – but honestly, that's the whole appeal.
Location: Broad Street, City Centre
What to expect: Cheesy pop bangers, Thursday student nights, fun-loving vibe
Broad Street understandably isn’t for everyone. If you prefer dance and electronic music to the charts, you’ll feel a lot more at home in the converted warehouses and intimate grassroots venues of Digbeth.
Lab11 is Digbeth's premier underground club and where Birmingham's rave scene really comes alive. It has a distinct industrial vibe with a maze-like layout, big sound systems and top-quality production with smoke machines and light shows in the main room.
The venue regularly hosts student nights (especially during fresher’s week) and its long-running AFTA DARK event, which has drawn some massive DJs in the past, goes on until 5am. Sweaty, intense and a world away from Broad Street.
Location: Trent Street, Digbeth
What to expect: Warehouse vibes, multiple rooms, mix of electronic music
XOYO Birmingham brought London's legendary clubbing brand to Digbeth and it's been another excellent addition to the city’s underground scene. The venue hosts huge names in house, techno and drum and bass, backed up by amazing production.
It’s more polished than some of Digbeth’s grittier venues, with a rooftop terrace open for select events where you can gaze at the Birmingham skyline. Like LAB11, there are lots of student events in fresher's week, as well as the occasional student-only night during term.
Location: Lower Trinity Street, Digbeth
What to expect: International DJs, themed events, rooftop terrace
Smaller and much more intimate than Digbeth’s other venues, suki10c has built a cult following among students and locals since opening its doors in 2012. The venue keeps things fresh with an eclectic events list spanning techno, drum and bass, reggae, garage and rock.
It’s an independent club that does things a little differently, with the exterior covered wall-to-wall in graffiti and the venue powered by 100% wind farm energy. The capacity is just 150 people, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself in close quarters.
Location: Bordesley Street, Digbeth
What to expect: Small venue, mix of electronic music, indie spirit
If the 3am finishes don’t do it for you, Birmingham’s bar scene offers something a bit more low-key and sophisticated. There are loads of spots around the city centre that are great for pre-drinks, date nights or when you just want to feel a bit fancy without the student union chaos.
The Lost & Found, just off New Street, gives you that upmarket bar experience with a great line-up of cocktails. The decor is eccentric Victorian with antique furniture and quirky touches everywhere – it's very Instagrammable!
The venue draws a mixed crowd, so it’s a good place to head if you need a break from the student masses. Just note that it gets busy on Saturdays, when the drinks are flowing for bottomless brunch.
Location: Bennetts Hill, City Centre
What to expect: Victorian grandeur, mixed crowd, great cocktails
The Alchemist is probably Birmingham's most aesthetic cocktail bar – drinks come with bubbles, flames and some even change colour. We’re talking molecular mixology techniques with bartenders putting on a proper show when making your drinks.
It’s definitely more expensive than your average student bar, so best saved for special occasions when you and your friends feel like treating yourselves. The food's also excellent if you're making an evening of it.
Location: Colmore Row, City Centre; Brindleyplace, City Centre
What to expect: Unique cocktails, great service, upscale vibe
The Botanist is another local favourite with an enviable location right on the canal. As the name suggests, there’s a distinct botanical vibe with loads of hanging plants and a generally gorgeous aesthetic.
It’s a popular spot for cocktails, bottomless brunch and live music, and the garden area that looks out onto the canal is the perfect place to set up for the day during summer.
Location: Gas Street Basin, City Centre
What to expect: Leafy decor, great beer garden, canalside views
There’s nothing like a bit of friendly competition with your mates. Whether you’re into darts, mini golf or retro video games, hitting the city’s activity bars is one of the most fun things to do in Birmingham offers an alternative to the usual bar-pub-club cycle.
Based in the Custard Factory over in Digbeth, Golf Fang puts the ‘crazy’ in ‘crazy golf’. The 18-hole course features wild (and often inappropriate) set design with wall-to-wall graffiti, wacky art installations and an all-round carnival-like atmosphere.
The bar serves great cocktails and craft beers, and you’ll often find a DJ playing which adds to the energy. Better yet, the venue offers special student prices from just £7.50 for bookings from Sunday to Thursday.
Location: Custard Factory, Digbeth
What to expect: Hilarious course, student deals, party vibe
If you don’t want to limit yourself to just one type of activity, Boom Battle Bar is the place to go. It’s chaos in the best possible way, with axe throwing, shuffleboard, darts, beer pong and crazy golf all under one roof.
It’s located on Broad Street, so it’s a fun spot to start your night before hitting the clubs. As with Golf Fang, you can grab big student discounts on bookings and drinks when visiting between Sundays and Thursdays.
Location: Broad Street, City Centre
What to expect: Great variety, buzzing atmosphere, lots of students
If gaming is your thing, you’ll absolutely love NQ64 – Birmingham's best arcade bar. Here you can revisit retro classics like Pac-Man, Mario Kart and Street Fighter, try your luck on the arcade machines and even play a round of laser quest.
Entry is free and so are the consoles (as long as you buy a drink!), with the arcades taking tokens which you purchase from the bar. It’s great value and as a student, you even get 50% off tokens and exclusive drink deals outside of Saturdays.
Location: Custard Factory, Digbeth
What to expect: Retro games, laser quest, neon-splattered decor
Birmingham’s live entertainment scene always has something on, whether that’s a gig from an exciting new band or an evening of stand-up comedy. It's another great way to enjoy a night out that doesn’t completely revolve around drinking while also seeing a different side to the city.
The O2 Academy is one of the main live music venues in the city centre, hosting everything from underground acts to established musicians on tour (major international artists typically play at the bp pulse LIVE arena near the airport or the Utilita Arena).
The venue has multiple rooms, ranging from the 3000-capacity main hall to the intimate Academy3 that fits 250 people, so you get artists of all sizes performing here. There’s also the O2 Institute over in Digbeth, another great venue that regularly hosts big names.
Location: Bristol Street, City Centre
What to expect: Big capacity, indie bands, pop acts
The Glee Club is Birmingham’s premier comedy venue with shows most nights and an excellent, ever-changing lineup of acts. The main room accommodates about 500 people, meaning you get the chance to see big-name comedians but it’s still intimate enough for crowd work.
Student tickets are available from £8 for Thursday Comedy Carousel, Friday Night Comedy and Saturday Night Comedy shows, which is an absolute bargain. The service is great, too, as food and drink are delivered straight to the table.
Location: The Arcadian, City Centre
What to expect: Amazing stand-up, mix of acts, great value
Based in the southern suburb of Kings Heath, Hare & Hounds is one of Birmingham’s most beloved live music venues. It’s fully independent and has been going for decades, hosting everything from jazz, indie and hip hop to techno and drum and bass.
The venue is definitely more of a local spot, but it also draws a lot of students from nearby Selly Oak – especially for some of the grittier electronic events. The staff are genuinely passionate about the music they put on and the energy is top tier.
Location: High Street, Kings Heath
What to expect: Intimate setting, mix of genres, great sound system
Birmingham's student nightlife is up there with the best in the UK. The sheer variety means everyone finds their scene, whether that's club nights or underground raves. Don’t be afraid to explore beyond Broad Street – your best nights out will probably be the ones you didn't plan!
