10 of the Best Places to Eat Outdoors in Lancaster This Summer For Students

This summer we can finally let our hair down after a couple of years of Covid restrictions, and after exam season and deadlines are over make the most of our freedom.

So, if you’re a foodie like us you’ll start to think about all the mouthwateringly tantalising places for eating out in Lancaster with friends.

What better way to pass a sunny summer’s day than by sitting outside on a terrace with a beer in hand and gorgeous grub on a plate in front of you?

If that sounds like the ideal plan to you, then sit back and let us take you through just a few of the options to choose from this summer…

1. The White Cross

This is one of the best places for eating out in Lancaster as it offers tasty pub grub all day long from midday til 9pm at night.

Located by the side of the canal it’s the perfect place for chilling out and taking in the views on a balmy summer evening.

Here you can enjoy a selection of 13 cask ales, two rotating craft beers plus freshly ground coffee and wines by the glass.

2. Pendle Witch

History buffs will have already clocked that this one is named after the famous Lancashire witches of the region, and that’s not the only cool thing about this pub.

With friendly staff and a selection of juicy burgers (we recommend the Monster Munch burger), this is a fantastic place for a laid-back evening. 

They also put on pub quizzes, so get your uni mates together to form a team and try your luck!

3. Merchants 1688

Another solid option for eating out in Lancaster is the Merchants 1688.

As the name suggests, it was a 17th-century wine cellar with a garden, which now serves up traditional pub grub as well as some fancier seasonal dishes.

There’s outdoor seating in the garden and vegetarian and vegan options, as well as gluten free options.

4. Whale Tail

Vegetarians will be happy to know that Whale Tail serves up veggie dishes which use local, organic and fairtrade produce.

Tucked away in a side street of the city, this cafe gives off minimalist vibes with its simple whitewashed walls. You can also choose to sit outdoors to enjoy a selection of colourful and delicious dishes served up by friendly staff.

5. The Study Room

The moment you walk into this Lancaster pub on Church Street, you’ll notice its modern, eclectic decor and furnishings.

It has TVs to watch sport and plenty of seating options including a beer garden.

The perfect place for having a few beers with uni mates, there’s also a great selection of delicious pub classics like burgers, onion rings, and the like. There’s also options for veggies and vegans, as well as gluten free dishes. All served by well dressed, friendly waiting staff.

6. The Three Mariners

The best fish and chips in the UK is to be had at the Three Mariners.

Proper authentic, delicious, homemade food served promptly by friendly staff will keep you coming back for more.

If you’re studying History you’ll like this one as it gives you real ‘blast from the past’ vibes! Its exposed brickwork and antique looking bar and pub decor will make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

Situated on Bridge Lane, a stone’s throw from Lancaster Castle, it’s one of the best places for eating out in Lancaster centre, and there’s even outdoor seating areas to make the most of the long summer evenings.

7. Toll House Inn

Think Gastropub and you’ve got it in one.

Somewhat of a hidden gem, this should definitely be on your list of places for eating out in Lancaster this summer.

The staff are super friendly and you won’t have to wait long to be served.

The mouth waters just thinking about the amazing pub classics served up here. We recommend the Chicken Supreme, the Fish Pie, Hotpot Pudding and Maple Pigs in Blankets.

If you’ve got a birthday or graduation event coming up you can also rent out the private room.

8. Cappuvino Bar and Restaurant

This place is undoubtedly one of the best places for eating out in Lancaster, with its fantastic atmosphere and wide selection of scrumptious dishes.

It’s an independent local restaurant and bar staffed by friendly, helpful waiters and waitresses.

They serve up international gastropub cuisine, and there are gluten free options available.

We highly recommend the meat lovers platter board, or maybe some cheese curds, which you could accompany with a nice South African Chenin Blanc.

9. The Boot and Shoe

You’ll be welcomed with open arms if you choose to eat here.

It’s easily one of the best options for eating out in Lancaster, with its outdoor seating area and welcoming staff.

They serve up a selection of burgers, pizzas, ribs, chilli and many more dishes.

There are also veggie options so something for everyone!

10. Molly’s

If you’re a fan of Italian food then this is the perfect place for you.

They offer a selection of classic Italian dishes including pizzas, alongside vegetarian and vegan options.

There’s outdoor seating so you can get the real Italian al fresco dining experience, or you can head indoors to take in the dimmed lighting ambience.

On top of that some of the friendliest staff in Lancaster.
