Bus
The main mode of public transport in Liverpool is the bus. There’s an extensive network, with regular, reliable services. The main terminals are centrally located at Liverpool ONE and Queen Square, taking you as far as the airport.
Get to know some of Liverpool’s most iconic locations when you arrive by bussing to sites like the Beatles’ Penny Lane and Strawberry Field.
As a student, you can save a bit of cash by taking public transport in Liverpool, with various young people’s value tickets. Plan journeys using the Arriva app.

Train

Catch one of the frequent Merseyrail train services across 68 Liverpool stations. Take a spring break adventure, catch a train to key destinations such as London, Manchester, Birmingham, and Scotland.
Crossing the city rapidly is no problem, with 4 central underground stations - Lime Street, Liverpool Central, Moorfields and James Street.
Some of the public transport in Liverpool has gone digital with the trains app, for live travel updates and ticketing. A lot of train stations still require paper tickets, though, so it’s worth doing a bit of homework to find out whether your stops accept digital tickets.
Ferry
The Mersey Ferry is famous, thanks to the 1964 classic hit ‘Ferry Cross the Mersey’ by Gerry and the Pacemakers.
Board this iconic mode of public transport in Liverpool, sailing between Liverpool and Birkenhead, on the opposite side of the river. Rides are cheap, at just £3.70 return, and this is a relaxing and pleasant way to see Liverpool’s legendary docks and waterfront.
For a longer trip, take a ferry along the historic Manchester Ship Canal, an integral part of the UK’s impressive industrial heritage.

Bicycle

There are various schemes, like CityBike, where you can collect a bike from a central street station. There’s also Bike & Go, where you pick up the bike from a train station for a fixed daily charge.
Taxi
After enjoying the phenomenal Liverpool nightlife, there’s no shortage of taxis to take you back to your Yugo student residence. Just keep your eyes peeled for the orange light which signals availability.
There are taxi ranks in busy shopping areas like Bold Street, Hanover Street and Whitechapel.
The cheaper alternative is to call a minicab using a private firm such as Com Cabs. They look like ordinary cars and can’t be hailed in the street - pre-booking only.
Coach
