How to thrive in this city

Starting life as a student at the University of Edinburgh? You can get to know the most important bits of this city in this quick guide. We’ll look at the main uni buildings, transport links, the best to places to shop, and more.

Let’s give you the grand tour.

Main University Buildings

The university’s main campus is 15 minutes’ walk from the city centre, known as the Central Area.

As a student, here is where you will spend much of your time. Most of the buildings are a short walk from one another: you can quickly get to the Main Library, the Students’ Association, the Centre for Sport and Exercise, and many school buildings.

But depending on the subject you take, you are likely to spend time at one or more of the university’s other campuses too:

Check out the campus maps for more.

Transport

With a population of 487,500, Edinburgh is a big, big city. But don’t worry. Because when you do need to travel, it’s easy. There are buses, trams and trains.

Lothian and First operate the main bus services around the city – great for getting around on the cheap. And a tram network connects many city-centre stops to the airport.

The main train station is Edinburgh Waverley Station. It’s just 15 minutes’ walk from the campus: Edinburgh, Midlothian EH1 1BB. From here you can easily connect to anywhere else in the country — whether you are heading back home or going on an adventure with your mates.

Use the journey planner to find info about specific stops.

Shops

Edinburgh is a great place to shop, no matter what you’re after.

Princess Street is home to the essential shops – including many your favourite high-street names – as well as Jenners, a quirky department store that has been here since 1838.

But for a real shopping experience, check out the Grassmarket. Once a medieval marketplace, it’s now a vibrant area with plenty of eclectic shops.
