RuPaul’s Drag Race
“I hate it when a show is funny, upbeat, educational, colourful and jaw-dropping” said no-one ever. Watch as a group of local drag queens compete for the title of America’s next drag superstar in this Emmy-award winning reality show. You will see lots of splits, tears and tantrums and all the glitter you might expect from a drag queen, but also the exploration of LGBTQIA+ life, civil rights and more.
We recommend: start at season 3 and work your way up. Go back for 1 and 2 once you’re hooked.
Big Mouth
A daring animated story of a group of young students battling with the trials and tribulations of coming-of-age. This hilarious sitcom features voices from Nick Kroll, Mark Levin amongst other great voice actors. If you enjoy crude comedy and re-living the craziness of your school years this is the show for you. Plus, there are four seasons with 10 episodes each, all around the 30-minute mark so it’s super easy to binge.
We recommend: late-night viewing. This is easy watching and doesn’t require much focus right before bed
Schitt’s Creek
This Canadian comedy has become a cult classic already. Comedy lovers rejoice as iconic writer Eugene Levy teams up with his son Dan and a cast of some comedy legends to tell the story of a rich family adapting to life in a remote motel. Antagonised by the bizarre local mayor and simple folk of the local town, we follow four main characters through marriage, work and even a musical production.
We recommend: simply watch Moira’s best bits to get a sense of the expertly written humour at play in Schitt’s Creek.
The Queen’s Gambit
Rising to fame in late 2020 this show has been at the top of our watch list for a while. A historical drama based on the Walter Trevis novel of the same name; we follow an orphaned Beth Harmon journeying her quest to go from student to master of Chess. Female-empowerment, cold-war complexities and a true tale of overcoming, this is prime weekend viewing.
We recommend: Each episode is an hour long, so this is perfect for a chilled weekend after a busy week of college/university.
American Horror Story
Penned by hit-making writer Ryan Murphy who wrote the likes of Glee and Ratched (another good watch), each season of this top-rated show explores the folklore of American history. The clue is in the name, but you will be seeing some gore and scares. But, we would argue it is so worth it as guest stars Lady GaGa, Joan Collins and Cuba Gooding Jr. join a revolving cast of incredible actors.
We recommend: It’s rare this happens but season 1 ‘Murder House’ is the best of them all! If you need more convincing, try ‘Hotel’.
