The Guide to Student Jobs in Perth

While you’re studying, it can be a good idea to build some experience and earn some money working on a part time or casual basis. Even working outside of your field of study can have some great benefits when you look for a permanent role out of university. We’ve listed some of the jobs you may choose to work while studying and we even have a way we can help!

So What Kind of Jobs Can You Work?

There are several jobs you might choose to work, such as:

• Waiting or bar-tending

• On campus jobs e.g. library assistant

• Call centre staff

• University or school tutor

• Retail sales assistant

• Internships

Most of these jobs are employed on a casual basis, meaning you have no obligation to work a set number of hours a week – so they’re perfect for a student looking to earn some money and get some practical experience.

If you’re staying with us in our Boulevard accommodation, there’s plenty of local businesses where you could work. There is a high concentration of restaurants and cafés in the nearby Northbridge area where you can earn money and build your people skills and experience in customer service, which is highly valued by employers.

It’s also very close to the Perth CBD where you may find work in an internship or part time role, so it’s the perfect place to study and work from.

This is by no means an exhaustive list though, so think creatively about what you’d like to do!

How Much Can You Earn?

When working one of these jobs while you’re a student, you can expect to earn around $20 per hour. If you’re working under a casual agreement, you’ll receive a 25% loading to compensate for the nature of your employment. Australia’s minimum wage is quite high when compared to other countries of the world, so you will certainly have enough money to enjoy your time at university.

Some jobs may pay more, as it depends on the job and nature of employment, but this is a good baseline figure – particularly for your first job while studying.

How Do You Find a Student Job?

There are several places where jobs are advertised, particularly for students. Most businesses now post online at places such as:

• Seek

• Indeed

University job boards

• UWA

• Curtin

• ECU

• Murdoch

• Notre Dame

• Gumtree

• Student Edge

If you’re looking to work in small businesses such as restaurants, small clothing stores and bars, you should politely approach in person and ask to leave your resume for any upcoming vacancies. Finally, consider asking your network if they know of any vacancies. As most jobs are never advertised, it can be a great way to find the job you’ve been looking for.
