How to Find a Student Job in Edinburgh

With the price of a pint slowly rising and the student loan not quite cutting it, it’s time to get a part-time job.

Working while at university is a great way to meet new people and develop your skills. It’s also a safety net for when you finish uni and start looking for your dream job.

This is the ultimate guide for students and graduates that will get you started in the world of work.

Working for the University

The University of Edinburgh offers a variety of part-time and temporary roles that are flexible around your studies. These jobs are advertised on University Jobs (university login required).

Similarly, Edinburgh Napier also has a platform called myFuture (university login required) which advertises part-time roles to graduate positions.

If you’ve already got an interview, this platform allows you to book a mock interview with a career advisor.

Edinburgh Careers Fair

This is a great opportunity to meet local and national employers face-to-face and apply directly for hundreds of vacancies. Put a face to your application and gain that edge.

If you’re unsure what you want to do after you graduate (you’re not alone), talk to professionals and they’ll provide you with career and graduate advice alongside CV and interview tips.

Edinburgh University Students’ Association

EUSA is run by students and exists to represent and support a community of 42,000 at the University of Edinburgh.

Working for the Students’ Association will provide you with a good balance due to flexible hours which fit around your studies and a short commute from your accommodation.

You could be working in all areas of the business including IT, Marketing and Finance. You’ll develop a range of skills and have a chance to meet other students and make friends.

Hospitality

Edinburgh is not short of bars, pubs, restaurants and coffee shops which means there’s a sea of opportunities for part-time jobs.

Working in a bar can be fun and the chance to meet new people in an exciting environment. You may have to work late nights but that’s what you’ve signed up for.

If you’re more of a morning person then a coffee shop could be a great choice. Work as a catering assistant or barista and you can develop exceptional people skills.

Hospitality can be extremely rewarding, you become a part of the community and have the chance to make someone’s day each shift. A smile goes a long way.

Retail

Many retailers hire part-time and temporary staff, especially during Christmas. Princess Street is the main shopping area in Edinburgh with unique boutiques and big names such as Zara, Primark and Urban Outfitters.

Then you have George Street which is a fancy location with luxury hotels and high-end shops.

There are lots of tourist shops dotted around Edinburgh alongside the famous landmarks, statues and monuments. If you speak another language then you’ll have a good chance of getting a job as this is who they’re looking for.

As you can see, there genuinely are loads of job opportunities for students in Edinburgh. So once you get settled into your Yugo student accommodation, get your CV sorted and make that first move. You won’t regret it!
