Studying Abroad in Dublin for American Students
Ireland and America have close cultural connections, going back centuries. So if you want to explore your Irish roots, or simply experience the real St Patrick’s Day, there’s no better place to study abroad than Dublin, the Emerald Isle’s capital city. There are a few important things to know before traveling over, due to the covid-19 situation, but once you’re here, you’ll find a wealth of things to do.
Traveling to Dublin
U.S. citizens are permitted to enter Ireland, but you’ll need to show a negative COVID-19 RT-PCR test taken within 72 hours prior to arrival. If you don’t show this before you get on your airplane or ferry, you won’t be allowed to board, so it’s very important you provide this evidence.
You’ll also need to complete the COVID-19 Passenger Locator Form before you arrive. America was removed from the designated states list on 28 May so you won’t need to undergo mandatory quarantine unless you’ve been in a restricted country in the previous 14 days to entering Ireland. If you have been in one of the designated states you’ll need to quarantine in a hotel and arrange your stay through the Irish government’s mandatory quarantine portal.
But make sure you check the most up to date information on the Irish government’s website as these details can easily change.
Enjoy Dublin’s Rich Culture
Coming out of quarantine, make St Stephen’s Green your first port of call. This is Dublin’s miniature version of Central Park, a great place to relax and perfect for jogging, cycling, and picnics. Another stunning landmark is the Ha’penny Bridge, or Liffey Bridge, a fascinating example of cast iron bridge construction from 1816 and an important part of Dublin’s history, as well as a scenic place for some outdoor exercise.
IMMA, the Irish Museum of Modern Art, is one of the finest museums in the world and is packed with masterpieces by Paula Rego, Lucian Freud, Giorgio de Chirico and many more. Set in the 48-acre grounds of the former Kilmainham Hospital, this grand building is a must for art lovers.
And when you fancy a fun-filled day or night out with your new friends, there’s nowhere better than Dublin’s legendary Temple Bar area. Here you’ll find countless great bars, pubs and clubs, full of friendly locals and visitors. The nightlife in Dublin is the envy of the world, and the Temple Bar district is right at the heart of it all.
