Newcastle may be more famous for its nightlife than its food, but it is making its mark on the culinary world, with more restaurants per square mile than any other city in the north east. What’s more, food in Newcastle is great for students – cheap, tasty and plentiful. It’s best known for its stottie cakes – round white buns which make brilliant sandwiches.

Foodies will love the Grainger market – a covered food market – and if you’re serious about your food, you should check out the annual EAT! Festival and its winter sister EAT! IN, which is all about creating and sharing the best local food.

If your parents are visiting, ask them to take you to the Broad Chare. For reasonably-priced Greek food try Kafeneon and if you like burritos you’ll love Zapatista.

Hungry students will love the gigantic burgers at Fat Hippo Underground and The Bridge Tavern offers a warm Geordie welcome to the town. The Annual EAT! Festival and its winter sister EAT! IN showcase the best local food as well as familiar friends from around the world.

There are also over 21 big-name restaurants within the Intu Eldon Square Shopping Centre within Grey’s Quarter.

On the banks of the River Tyne, Quayside has restaurants to suit everyone’s taste, and to top that off you get a beautiful view of Newcastle’s wonderful bridges.

There really are endless numbers of places to eat in town!
