Our Secret Tips to Student Life in Dublin

You’ve probably heard of Grafton Street, Temple Bar and the Guinness Storehouse, so we asked the students of Dublin to share their secret tips just for you!

Starting with a historic landmark, we’ve got Kilmainham Gaol. Instead of visiting the main museums and galleries, why not take a visit to this former prison first built in 1796. Known for confining some of the most renowned political leaders in Irish history, take a step back in time and explore what it was like to be trapped in one of the harshest punishment facilities in Ireland.
The one-hour tours give you an insight into what life was like for prisoners, from only candles for light and even a small hanging cell, which was built in 1891.

Toastie and a pint for a great price? What more could you ask for? Our next secret tip is to give the famous pubs a miss, and seek out the less well-known food & drink spots. You’re guaranteed a much more authentic experience and can reap the benefits of some great deals too.
Mary’s bar and hardware is exactly what it sounds like - open seven days a week, this unusual bar hosts regular live music nights, offers a range of food and drink, and is located right in the heart of Dublin’s city centre. Although not compulsory, if you need some hardware tools or screws, you can buy them over the bar too!

Living in a city with so much to explore means sometimes it’s best to save on the basics so you’ve got a bigger budget to see everything on offer. Our next tip may sound pretty straightforward, but it’s definitely worth it. If you’re tackling cooking in your student accommodation, head to Lidl for quality groceries at a reasonable price. There’s a wide range of food on offer, and it’s got you covered whenever you’re craving some snacks at home.
Cooking in your residence a few nights a week means you can also make the most of the amazing restaurants and cafes on offer the rest of the time!

And that brings us to more food! If you fancy a cheerful menu with a great range of drinks, Token is your place. Described as an “award-winning restaurant – bar – retro arcade – pinball parlour” you’ll have plenty to keep you entertained for an evening out.
