How to make your wardrobe greener

With these simple tips you can contribute to make the world a little more sustainable when it comes to your wardrobe.

In the face of climate change, we all face the challenge of making our way of life more sustainable. There is a lot of room for improvement, especially when it comes to textile consumption. According to a Greenpeace study on "Fast Fashion", every German buys around 60 (!) items of clothing per year. Reason enough to take a closer look at your own wardrobe.

Inventory of the wardrobe

In principle, the following also applies here: less is often more. Before you’re heading out for the next shopping tour, we recommend an inventory of your wardrobe with some questions in mind: What do I have? What do I really need? What can go? This gives you an overview of your clothes and secondly, you can also create space for new things.

Muck out in an environmentally friendly way

What to do with all the things that no longer fit or are no longer to your liking? In this case, mucking out is in order, with the aim that the pieces that can still be worn remain in the textile cycle.

As an uncomplicated solution, a donation per package is a good idea, as is possible with PACKMEE. Simply pack the items you no longer want into a cardboard box, print out a free shipping slip via packmee.de, stick it on and return the package to a DHL or Hermes office. With DHL, you can even send your parcel in a completely climate-neutral way and your clothes get a second life. As a thank you, you can choose a voucher from the PACKMEE partners. The best thing: 100 percent of PACKMEE's profits from the textiles go to Save the Children. This way you not only save resources but do something good at the same time.

Second hand as an alternative

When you have completed the inventory, you can better assess whether you need new clothes at all. If so, have a look at flea markets or clothing exchanges, both online and in the real world. Here you can sometimes find real treasures. It is fun, sustainable and environmentally friendly.

If new, then sustainable

If you do want something completely new, it is important that the textiles are sustainable and fair. There are numerous seals to help you recognize this type of clothing, such as the green button, OEKO-TEX or the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). The seals signify environmental compatibility and fair production of a garment.

The right care is important

Read the care instructions on your garments – these help so that your new favourite pieces retain their shape and colour. For the sake of nature, environmentally friendly laundry detergents should be used. Most of them are so good today that they already work at 30 degrees Celsius.

Whether second hand or sustainably new: If you really need new clothes, you should not miss out on the joy of shopping.
