Starting life as student at the University of Brighton? You can get to know the most important bits of this city in this quick guide. We’ll look at the main uni buildings, transport links, the best to places to shop and more.

Main University Buildings

21,000 students call home The University of Brighton. You can trace the uni’s roots back to 1859 when the Brighton School of Art was opened in the Brighton Royal Pavilion.

It’s split into five campuses.

The university’s main campus is the Falmer campus. Which is three miles from Brighton city centre.

You’ll probably spend some time here. There’s a library, computer rooms, a restaurant and café/bar, a Students’ Union cafe and a shop. Sports facilities on the campus include floodlit 3G Astroturf pitch, netball and tennis courts, and a new sports centre.

Student services are also here: a careers service, counselling service, student advice service, disability and dyslexia service and chaplaincy.

But depending on the subject you take, you are likely to spend time at one or more of the universities other campuses too:

• Grand Parade campus in Brighton city centre
• Moulescoomb campus north of Brighton city centre
• The Eastbourne campus about ten minutes walk from the seafront
• Hastings campus three minutes south of the station

Transport

With a population of 163,000 Brighton is a fairly small city, and that’s one of its main advantages. Because it’s super easy to get around on the train and on the bus.

Brighton has a decent bus system. Brighton & Hove Bus Company run the service, and for students it’s the best way to get around the city. It’s £2.20 for one-time travel to anywhere within the city, or £4.60 for all-day travel.

As for trains, the main station is Brighton Railway Station. It’s right in the middle of the city centre on Queens Rd, Brighton BN1 3XP.

From here you can easily connect to anywhere else in the country — whether you are heading back home or going on an adventure with your mates.

Shops

Brighton shopping is brilliant shopping.

There’s both the vintage charm of the Lanes, and the modern style of the city centre’s Churchill Square.

Around the city, a mix of high-street stores and small specialist shops sell the familiar and the weird and wonderful. There are brand and designer names, there’s antique jewellery, kites, tribal textiles and hand-made crafts. And more.

For something a bit different check out the Artists’ Quarter on the beachfront. Here are more shops and studios, and you can sit at a beachside café for the evening atmosphere.
