Getting ready for freshers week? Here’s a list of tips and tricks to help you get through the week in one piece.

Push yourself out of your comfort zone.

Joining groups on social media can be a great way to socialise and build up your network. Go one step further, put your phone down and force yourself to socialise with other students whatever the situation.

Make your room feel more homely

Nothing says I’ve moved in like adding a bit of personality to your room. Make your room feel that little extra homely by decorating it with things that comfort you such as big comfy pillows and blankets.

Prop your door open

Having your door open will invite people to come and socialise with you. It’s also a great way to bond with your new flatmates!

Plan alternative ideas

Freshers has a reputation for drinking and more drinking so plan something a bit different for a night off. There are plenty of options that don’t include alcohol; think a trip to the cinema, a film night in or even spending an evening baking.

Stay Organised

There’s so much going on and so many new people to meet. To stay organised, use you calendar on your phone so you don’t miss an exciting party or an important lecture.

Budget

There’s nothing more important than budgeting as a student. Sticking to cash payments means it’s easier to manage your money and control your spending. Cut back on meals out and think about cooking your food at home - You could even get your flatmate involved and it could help in getting to know them better as well as saving your money.

Get the paperwork out of the way

Starting uni comes with lots of paperwork and life admin, so so be prepared and do it early. You’ll skip all the queues and can stay in bed when you need it most. Thank us later.

Student discount

Student discount is one of the best things about being a student, apart from getting a degree of course. Make sure you don’t forget to take advantage while you can, it’s always worth asking. Be sure to check out Unidays or NUS before any online purchases too.

Get your bearings

Whether you’re new to the city or well versed with the streets, it’s always a good idea to go for a walk near where you’re living. You’ll quickly find all the local amenities, transport links and the coolest bars around.

Look after yourself

You’re most likely living away for the first time so make sure you look after yourself. Don’t drink too much, walk home with friends, keep an eye on your belongings and have a healthy diet.
