The best bits about studying in Sheffield for university
Once famed for steel, Sheffield is now best known for its thriving music scene, buzzing nightlife and beautiful scenery. Whether you’re going to the University of Sheffield or Sheffield Hallam, there’s always something exciting to do in this cultural melting pot of a city. Here’s how to make the most of your time in this amazing place...
The first step is to look the part. A short walk from Bramall Court, Division Street is a must-visit destination for lovers of vintage goods and unique clothing. It’s packed full of stylish independent shops, including the mighty Freshman’s Vintage Store, which is as much a meeting place as a shop! It stocks tons of dazzling pre-worn pieces as well as bespoke collaborations with local artists.
If fun, femme 90s wear is your style, visit Vulgar on nearby Devonshire Street for a huge range of gorgeous re-worked items. Then head next door to Bear Tree Records to build your record collection. Here’s where you’ll find the top new releases alongside a wide range of essential second-hand vinyl.
And keep an eye out for Easter eggs from the city’s rich musical history. This area is home to one of Sheffield’s very best, a blue plaque that celebrates the moment when local legend Jarvis Cocker broke his leg clambering out of a window while trying to impress people at a party in 1985!
Food & Drink
When you fancy a bite to eat, head over to London Road just around the corner from Bramall Court. Here you’ll find a huge range of diners and cafés, taking in everything from aromatic Turkish cuisine to eye-catching ice cream treats.
Next, explore The Forum. This is Sheffield’s renowned independent shopping centre, home to countless shops and boutique stalls, along with a locally-adored restaurant with plenty of affordable, ethical options. This student fave also has an outdoor terrace where you can sip on a fruit-packed cocktail or chill out after studying with a meal in the open air.
If you want somewhere more intimate to hunker down with wine and a burger, modern pub Bungalows and Bears is a student hotspot, especially in the evenings. This former fire station regularly hosts small-scale gigs and events, making it ideal for a full evening out with friends.
Put on your dancing shoes and head to iconic indie venue The Leadmill, where countless successful bands have enjoyed playing live. As well as must-see gigs, The Leadmill also hosts comedy nights, drag events and club nights and, more
importantly, serves a decent, cheap pint. Our tip: make sure to pre-book as this place is guaranteed to be packed over the coming months.
Whether you’re tackling a hangover or simply want to clear your mind after a day of lectures, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to places to relax in Sheffield. Heeley People’s Park is a stone’s throw from Bramall Court and the largest community-run park in England. Sweeping hills, art structures, rock climbing, it’s all here, ran by friendly locals. The Botanical Gardens are another stunning destination. This is a vibrant haven right in the centre of the city and home to lots of animals and plants with plenty of private spots to kick back and stretch out.
