The world is a big place. But there are little things you can do to keep on top
Okay. We’re not trying to be patronising, but stress can be like a tiny little demon. Imagine it now. Jumping up and down trying to distract you and ruin your day.
Well listen here tiny demon, we’ve got a few tips to help anyone defeat you. Because we want people to have fun. Here’s how:
10. Talk About Feelings
The Mental Health Foundation says this is a great way to stay in good health. So share often with your friends.
9. Eat Well
A good diet helps fight against all kinds of maladies, but it’s also proven to make us feel emotionally well. Says who? None other the brains of The Royal College of Psychiatrists.
8. Keep in Touch
Your long-term relationships are good for your long-term health. The guys at Bupa say: “Maintaining good relationships with people builds up a support network, which is always important”.
7. Take a Break
A five-minute pause from your studies, a half-hour walk around your halls, or a weekend away to somewhere new. All give you a good de-stress.
6. Accept Yourself
“Wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are.” ― Marilyn Monroe
5. Keep Active
Dr Alan Cohen, a GP who’s really interested in mental health, says that when people feel down, they often feel they’re not in control of their lives.
He says exercise gives back control, and this feeling flows into in control of other events.
4. Drink Sensibly
Drinking too much plays with your brain chemistry, lowering serotonin. That’s a chemical that balances your mood. So just, you know, take it easy.
3. Ask for Help
We’re all human and there’s no shame in getting support from your friends, family, or your university wellbeing service.
2. Do Something You’re Good at
Nothing makes us feel better than doing something we are awesome at.
1. Care for Something
The Mental Health Foundation says just caring for someone, or something, can boost the mood. So maybe look after a small plant. Like a cactus.
Or buy your friends a gift to let them know they’re loved.
If You Still Don’t Feel Better..
The steps we’ve just gone through are all great ways to take on that demon and nurture your mental health. Follow them and you’ll be happier, more balanced and back on the way to the fun.
But if at any point you feel like it’s not working, it’s best to get help. Don’t be afraid to ask. It’s easy. Just go to your student services, talk to someone about wellbeing, and the lovely people there will help you out.
