THE BENEFITS OF LIVING OFF-CAMPUS AT UNIVERSITY
Starting university can be an exciting but daunting process. Alongside the fact you are starting your career journey, you’ll most likely have lots of other big life decisions to make.
One of those decisions is choosing where to live. Many people think their only option is to live on-campus in halls of residence. But, a growing number of students are choosing to live in purpose-built student accommodation off-campus.
If you’re still a little unsure which accommodation could be right for you, don’t worry – we’ve got you. We’ve compared the benefits of living off-campus VS on-campus to help you decide.
More space and privacy
Living in close quarters might appeal to some. But for others, the idea of sharing a room or bathroom with people you’ve just met can be off-putting.
With off-campus accommodation, you’ll get an en-suite apartment to yourself, so you’re guaranteed space and privacy.
Plus, you can have friends and family come and stay with you – something that’s usually not allowed or highly restricted in university halls of residence.
Make new friends
One of the biggest concerns people have about living off-campus is whether they’ll make friends as easily as they would in halls of residence.
But living off-campus doesn’t mean you’ll miss out. You’ll still have your flat mates and communal areas where you can hang out with friends. Plus, some student accommodation providers even host regular social events throughout the year.
According to our recent survey, students said the top ways to make friends at uni were taking part in Freshers’ Week (57%) and joining societies (48%) - and these are all things you can take part in wherever you choose to live.
A third (35%) of UK students say their accommodation was key to performing well at university. That’s why it’s really important to make the decision that’s right for you.
Some people love the hustle and bustle of campus life. But, after a while, it can become a distraction to things like their sleep and studying.
Off-campus accommodation may provide you with a bit more opportunity to get some decent shut-eye before those big exams, or peace and quiet to work on that last minute assignment deadline!
Get to know the city you’re living in
More often than not, campus life can feel like a bit of a bubble, and it can be hard to stray away from it.
Living off-campus gives you more reason to get out and about and actually explore the city you’re living in. You get to experience more of the local nightlife, shopping, and culture, whilst still enjoying life on-campus as and when you choose to.
Gain more independence
If you’re someone who likes a bit more independence, off-campus living could be for you. Whether it’s cooking your own meals, managing budgets, or commuting, off-campus living can give you more exposure to what life could be like after graduating.
Choosing the right student accommodation for you should be a personal choice. Ultimately, it depends on your preferences and what you want to get out of your university experience.
Whatever you choose to do, we would always recommend doing your research, speaking to others about their experiences, and booking a viewing before you move in so you can get a good feel for the place you’re going to call home.
